12th Light [Video]

[The video starts with a very pleased Ushio's face, before panning around to show Mahogany Town. She's rather excited, having just explored the majority of the mountain behind her. It was something new, something she'd never gotten to see before.]

That was amazing. I know some people don't like caves all that much, but it was a great new experience for me. Even if I didn't find any new pokémon to travel with me.

I don't mind, though. I'm sure there will be plenty of others that will join me in the future.

[Trying to wave down and talk to wild pokémon or bribe them with snacks apparently isn't working so well. But she continues to try anyway. At least there's the breeding center she can always adopt from.]

Now that I'm in Mahogany Town, are there any places besides the gym I should visit?

There's a place on the edge of town that makes pretty good soup. It's gonna get cold soon.

You keep getting KO'd trying to catch Pokemon? Or just didn't see any you liked?

I'll have to check it out. Mm. I guess it will.

Oh, I don't catch them. None wanted to come with me, that's all.

That's a pretty novel concept. [He glances at his Pokeballs.]

You stay away from the Bug-Catching Contest, too?

[Ushio nods.]

Mmhm. I won't force any of them to come with me. They should have a choice in the matter, right?

Yeah. I like to think that they'd find a way of letting you know, though, even if they did... afterward...

[He's got some happiness evolutions that haven't happened yet, and he wonders.]

How do you approach them?

They all have their own quirks and personalities. I wouldn't be surprised if they were as smart, if not smarter than us sometimes.

I try talking to them, or offering them food. It doesn't always work though.

Surprising. I'd follow you after talking to you. Food would just seal the deal.

[yes he's horrible and he's sorry.]

I definitely believe they're sentient, or that they have souls. And they know things we don't.

That's how I met a couple members of my team.

They do. Even if we can't always understand them.

We can, sometimes... I met someone here who had mindreading capabilities.

[Lie. M'gann was from home and his teammate.]

She couldn't read my mind, but she could read the Pokemon's.

That must be pretty neat.

Mei speaks into my mind from time to time. I just wish it was easier to communicate with them, though.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Sometimes it's not a language barrier so much as it's a brick wall... and your Mei is only one of the group.

Yeah. Do you have psychic types that talk to you too?

I could show you where it is. We're in Mahogany right now.

That would be nice. Are pokémon allowed inside?

I have a Woobat, Carmilla. But she's never really been all that chatty.

[...she's also one of those happiness evolutions that hasn't happened yet, oops.]

You don't-- you don't think there's something wrong with that, do you?

I don't know. Mei didn't start talking to me until she'd evolved.

What's the condition for her evolution?

I can probably look it up if you tell me what kind of Pokemon she is... has she been with you long?

I think so...I've seen some of the smaller ones in there. But I don't think you could bring your Onix out or anything like that.

I'll wait for you by the Pokemon Center, alright?

Oh, okay.

[Well, that rules her most of her team out. But she can probably get away with letting her Shuckle sit under the table or something.]

Mei's a Gardevoir. She's shiny too. I found her egg in my backpack during Christmas.

That's pretty merry. Almost sounds like you're bragging.

[Not quite, but...]

Oh, no. I didn't mean to. I think everyone here got an egg on Christmas.

Hope that's a trend. I haven't seen a Christmas here.

_{[It's not hard to spot the shaggy photographer with a Litwick on his shoulder. Once he spots her, he waves an arm. The Litwick copies him and cheeps happily.]}

Hey...this is Boo.

[Upon spotting him, Ushio waves in return. Currently the only pokémon outside of their ball is her Shuckle, which just sort of lazily inches forward.]

Hello. That's Dango.

I hope so too. I enjoy raising them from eggs. You don't have to wait too much longer, right? Christmas is only a few months away.

_{[Henry eyes Dango, having never seen a pokemon like Shuckle before. He drops his arm to his side and gives both of them a nod. Now that he's out in meat-space with another person, he clams up a bit. Interaction is hard!]}

_{[He crosses the street from the Center and starts walking.]}

[Ushio follows close behind, humming idly to herself. She's gotten used to interacting with other people. When she first arrived, she'd never met another person before. At least that she could remember, anyways.]

Have you been in this town for very long?

Yeah. Twenty-four days after my birthday. Maybe I'll get an egg then, too. I haven't bought any recently.

I'm always looking at eggs other people offer up for adoption. It's better to raise them from the start, isn't it?

A few months...remember back when everybody woke up and suddenly three days were missing and then all of our poke'gears got all weird? After that, we all came here.

I think so. Easier to train and I think you get more used to each other that way. I've bought more eggs than actually made captures.

Mm. It helps to form bonds between us and them. I have too. Most of my pokémon are from breeders or the breeding center.

I remember a little. Most of it is kind of fuzzy though. So you've been here for a while, then.

It's a good system... when you can afford it.

I have a few gifts from friends, too. Those are special.

Yeah...two or three years...here we are!

_{[Henry gestures ahead of them and there is the cafe. Good smells waft toward them and it's easy to see why they are said to have the best soup in town. The name could have been better though.]

[Ushio actually perks up at the smell of food, as does her Shuckle. Living on trail mix and whatnot while travelling apparently doesn't compare to real food.

She just sort of tilts her head at the name, but she smiles. It's a cute name!]

That smells really good.

Weeell...I know enough to get by.

_{[He wonders if that means she has questions about the world and instantly starts worrying that he won't have the right answer.]}

I don't think you'll be disappointed.

That's good.

[She may or may not have questions, but that can wait until they eat.]

If it tastes as good as it smells, I won't be.

_{[Henry opens the door for her but doesn't follow until the Litwick on his shoulder starts bobbing up and down. He hadn't planned on joining her, but Boo is determined to get him to talk to people.]

[Plus, more people means she can feed off energy easier.]}

Okay, okay, I'm coming too. Boo probably wants me to get the tomato soup with magikarp crackers so she can play with them.

[Ushio looks around the restaurant curiously. She has a Litwick herself, but the poor thing is pretty shy. Her Shuckle is enough company, though. Even if it just kind of inches along behind her, and may be tasting whatever it comes into contact with.]

That sounds pretty good. I've never had tomato soup before.
